Da Terra – the culinary gem of Bethnal Green returns after a major renovation
October 19, 2024
Da Terra, led by chef Rafael Cagali and managed by Charlie Lee, will reopen on October 18, 2024, after a four-week renovation. Located in the historic Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green, in the heart of East London, the two-star restaurant has undergone a complete makeover to offer guests an even more personalized and unique dining experience.
A new chapter in the history of Da Terra
Nearly six years after opening, Da Terra's owners decided to refresh the interior and make modifications aimed at improving guest comfort and enhancing the service experience. As Charlie Lee says, "We felt it was time to reimagine our hospitality offering. We redesigned the space and made some subtle changes to the flow and ambiance of the room to make the experience even more personalized."
The modernized entrance now leads to a dedicated lounge area where guests can begin their culinary journey. With a pre-meal drink and light snacks, guests can relax before continuing their experience. The main dining room seats 28 people, providing an intimate atmosphere and the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the dining experience.
A kitchen open to new possibilities
Rafael Cagali is also excited about the changes made to the kitchen itself. "Every kitchen has its limitations," explains the chef. "The ability to make changes to the equipment and kitchen layout means that both the kitchen team and the staff are now better equipped to create unique experiences for our guests. I can't wait to start developing our menu and exploring the new possibilities this new layout opens up."
The renovation, though subtle at first glance, ushers in a new era for Da Terra. These changes are designed to further evolve the restaurant, both culinary and atmospheric. Cagali plans to further experiment with the menu, drawing on his rich heritage and global experiences, which have always inspired his creativity.
The Story of Da Terra
Da Terra, established in January 2019, earned its first Michelin star just eight months after opening. A second star followed in 2021, confirming its exceptional position on the London culinary scene. In 2023, Da Terra was ranked third in the prestigious National Restaurant Awards ranking of the 100 Best Restaurants in Britain.
At the heart of Da Terra is the cuisine of Rafael Cagali, who draws inspiration from his Brazilian and Italian heritage. This fusion of cultures forms the foundation of his unique culinary style, which focuses on a deep connection with nature, the land, and people. The tasting menu at Da Terra is a tribute to the chef's life journey—each dish tells a personal story, full of flavor, texture, and memories.
Flavors from around the world
Rafael Cagali's cuisine is deeply rooted in his Latin roots. His dishes reflect influences from Brazil, Italy, and even Spain, where he gained his culinary experience. These flavors combine in a refined form that celebrates the finest ingredients from around the world. One of the key elements of Cagali's style is his ability to combine simplicity with sophistication—each dish is a delicate interplay of flavors and textures that transports guests on a culinary journey across the globe.
Da Terra is renowned for its meticulously crafted tasting menu, which changes regularly depending on the season and available produce. Each dish is carefully considered, and its presentation on the plate is a work of art. Thanks to recent kitchen renovations, Rafael and his team will have even more opportunities to experiment and create new, surprising flavor combinations.
Personal service at the highest level
Not only is the cuisine at Da Terra top-notch, but service also plays a key role in creating a unique experience. Many dishes are served directly at the table by the chefs, adding a unique, personal touch to the entire experience. This form of service underscores the Da Terra team's commitment to providing guests with the highest quality service.
Charlie Lee emphasizes that a key element of the restaurant's philosophy is creating an atmosphere where guests feel special and can fully enjoy every aspect of their meal. The modernized space, more open and welcoming, allows for even better interactions between guests and staff.
The Future of Da Terra
The changes introduced at Da Terra mark the beginning of a new phase in the restaurant's development. Rafael Cagali and Charlie Lee have ambitious plans to continue developing their unique approach to hospitality and culinary art. With a new kitchen, a more open space, and a modernized backstage area, Da Terra is poised for continued success and the conquest of new culinary heights.
The restaurant will continue its mission to deliver unforgettable culinary experiences, drawing inspiration from Rafael Cagali's rich history and cultural heritage. These changes emphasize the attention to detail and relentless pursuit of perfection that has ensured Da Terra remains a premier destination on the culinary map of London.
