EXCELLENCE IN COSTA RICAN ARCHITECTURE: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH RODERICK ANDERSON OF SARCO ARCHITECTS, THREE-TIME LUXURY LIFESTYLE AWARD WINNER

November 3, 2023

Congratulations to SARCO Architects on their third consecutive victory! The firm won the prestigious 2023 titles of Best Luxury Architect Studio in Costa Rica and Best Luxury Villa Architecture for Paraiso 354 in Costa Rica, both awarded by Luxury Lifestyle Awards.

The architectural firm, headed by visionary Roderick Anderson, is known for its unique contribution to opulent architecture.

In our conversation, we had the pleasure of delving into Roderick's award-winning masterpiece, the Paraiso 354 residence, and learning about his distinctive approach to luxury architectural design.

Luxury Lifestyle Awards: Congratulations on winning the 2023 Luxury Lifestyle Award for Best Luxury Architecture Studio in Costa Rica and Best Luxury Architecture – Villa Paraiso 354 in Costa Rica. What do these accolades mean to you and your team?

Roderick Anderson: It's a great honor for us to not only win again for one of our stunning luxury residence designs, but more importantly, to win the award for Best Luxury Architectural Studio in Costa Rica for the second time. As winners of more than a dozen international design awards, it's wonderful to see so many entities recognizing our talent, effort, and attention to detail in our projects. It gives us immense pleasure not only to win these awards but also to provide our clients with added value to their properties by winning various international design awards.

LLA: Winning two Luxury Lifestyle Awards in 2023 is a significant achievement. How do you plan to leverage this recognition to further enhance your studio's reputation and expand your presence in the luxury architecture market?

RA: We have a clear focus on working in the specific market of high-end luxury homes for international clients. This is not only our preferred project type, but also where we are most successful, and where our systems and integrated design approach deliver the best results. Winning two Luxury Lifestyle Awards in 2023 (as well as being previous winners and being included in the Top 100 Architects and Designers in 2022) further enhances our international recognition for our talent and the quality of our work. These are key elements of our brand, which our clients look for when choosing an architectural firm for their projects.

LLA: Paraiso 354 offers breathtaking views of the ocean and the pristine valley. Can you discuss the design considerations that allowed you to maximize these stunning natural views and create a unique experience?

RA: Integrating views is always a key element of our designs. In Costa Rica, we are blessed with magnificent natural scenery in many of our locations. We understand that the visual pleasure of admiring our incredible landscapes and ocean views is one of the main reasons our clients choose to purchase real estate in Costa Rica. Our mission, therefore, is to create designs that not only take full advantage of these views but also highlight them and make them even more stunning. This is the basis not only for where we place specific elements of our design but also for how we design these specific spaces to not only blur the lines between indoor and outdoor areas but also to create homes that are truly unique. We focus on making these beautiful natural images even more stunning through the right framing, orientation, and even material selection. We always aim to create the necessary clarity in views or create an image that reflects stunning sunsets on the water of a pool.

LLA: Sustainability and environmental friendliness are becoming increasingly important in the world of luxury architecture. How does SARCO Architects incorporate sustainable elements into its designs while maintaining a high level of luxury?

RA: It's a very difficult balance that we always consider in our designs. Our clients will always want the best of the best, but at the same time, they are becoming increasingly aware that designs must be environmentally friendly. We focus on designing homes that not only use environmentally friendly materials but also, whenever possible, favor locally sourced materials. Additionally, energy efficiency is a key element of our luxury homes. One of the main strategies we like to implement is to design as much of the home's exterior as possible, by covering outdoor areas. We like to create all possible passageways, stairwells, etc., as outdoor spaces, which significantly reduces the energy demand of our homes. Again, this is difficult because our clients typically don't want their home to be what some call "barefoot luxury," which they feel diminishes the exclusivity and quality of their homes.

LLA: Your studio focuses on creating luxurious homes tailored to the individual needs of its clients. Can you share some insights into the process of collaborating with clients to ensure their unique visions are realized?

RA: We conduct numerous in-depth interviews to get to know our clients as best we can. While it's clear that our luxury homes share a common design philosophy, we don't really have a set design style. This is because we love listening to our clients, understanding what matters most: how they want their home to feel, and how they want to feel while spending time in their new paradise. Our job then is to interpret our clients' personalities and desires and transform them into spectacular designs so they can enjoy and spend precious time with family and friends, creating memories that will last for years to come.

LLA: Costa Rica is known for its stunning natural landscapes. How do the country's environment and culture influence your architectural designs, especially in projects like Paraiso 354?

RA: First and foremost, transparency and allowing all the most important spaces in the house to enjoy the magnificent views is a key element of our designs. However, this also involves understanding our weather conditions and issues like heat, if certain surfaces are too exposed. While everyone loves west-facing ocean views for sunsets, this also requires extensive overhangs to make these areas livable. In Paraiso 354, we recognized the opportunity to fully utilize the beautiful views of the northern bay and interior valley, and decided to position all bedrooms to face this view. This way, the owners can enjoy this distinct and majestic natural beauty while also enjoying cooler temperatures in the rooms and outdoors, as well as significant energy efficiency gains by facing these areas north.

LLA: The luxury market is constantly evolving. What trends are emerging in luxury architectural design, and how do SARCO architects stay current?

RA: We see our clients becoming more environmentally conscious and understanding that their design has an impact on nature. Designing a luxurious home that looks the part, that allows our clients to truly enjoy spending more time in their homes, while also reducing their environmental impact and energy consumption is a key concern. Careful selection of new materials that still look luxurious but don't have a significant environmental impact during extraction or production is becoming increasingly important. Combining local or indigenous materials, such as natural volcanic stone and tropical wood, with proper verification of their origins, is equally important. We must always stay abreast of market trends and apply and interpret them in relation to our local conditions to ensure our designs are always unique and feel like they belong there.

LLA: The Luxury Lifestyle Awards are a testament to the exceptional quality of your work. Can you tell us about the dedicated team and professionals who contribute to the realization of your architectural vision?

RA: We are, in fact, a small office and prefer to remain small so we can always provide a highly personal and personalized service to our high-profile clients. We prefer to work on fewer projects per year, but we maintain a high level of attention to detail, and wherever I can remain personally involved in the design, detailing, and construction of our projects, I am always present. Our team consists of two senior architects, two project architects, an interior designer, and two BIM modeling technicians, all of whom are up-and-coming young architects. I serve as general manager and design director, where I am personally involved in the design phases, coordinating and resolving issues with engineering teams, and in project execution and construction supervision. In addition, there are construction engineers and assistants responsible for the day-to-day operation of projects under construction. Interestingly, the majority of our team members are women, which is somewhat unusual in a male-dominated industry.

LLA: Looking ahead, what exciting projects does SARCO Architects have in the pipeline and what can we expect from the studio in the coming years?

RA: We're currently finalizing details for a new project called Villa Cantera. This is our latest project in the luxurious Peninsula Papagayo resort in Guanacaste. Photos and information about Villa Cantera will be coming soon, as it will be a truly stunning home. We also have other exciting projects in the pipeline, including a very ambitious luxury residential project for which SARCO Architects will be the sole design firm for the entire project.
