Milena House – Estonian escape to nature wins Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Ako In
June 28, 2024
Ako In is a family-owned design firm based in Tartu, Estonia. Their creation, Milena House, recently won the coveted Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Best Luxury Residential Interior Design in Estonia in 2024—demonstrating their unique ability to bring to life spaces that redefine comfort and sophistication.
Founded by Mait Lauri (CEO) and Alesja Kovalenko-Lauri, Ako In has carved out a niche in designing captivating interiors for both residential and public spaces. Their passion is creating spaces that not only satisfy a luxurious aesthetic but also foster a profound connection with the surrounding environment.
Ako In is an experienced interior and building design firm specializing in interior design since 2005. Their expertise extends from architectural conceptualization to final implementation, encompassing a deep understanding of the intricate workings of architecture and technical systems. Although primarily focused on interior design, they occasionally undertake entire projects, from architectural design to interior decoration, achieving award-winning results. Notable clients include Telia, Philip Morris International, and Euronics, and their portfolio ranges from luxury interiors to retail spaces and public spaces such as hotels and restaurants.
Led by lead designer Alesja Kovalenko-Lauri, known for her creativity and eye for color, Ako In emphasizes teamwork. Supported by a dedicated technician, the three-person team ensures meticulous attention to detail in every project. The company's name, Ako In, is a nod to Alesja's artistic roots, which stem from her signature "Ako" on artwork from her school days, culminating in Alesja Kovalenko Interiors.
The Milena House project perfectly illustrates this philosophy. Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the village of Tänassilma in Estonia, the client's brief was simple: a desire for luxury and a deep connection with nature. The Ako In team embarked on a collaborative journey with the client, carefully deciphering their vision and translating it into a tangible living space.
From Inside Out: A Design Process Rooted in Nature
The renowned American architect Frank Gehry said, "Many people don't understand this, but I design from the inside out, so that the finished product has a certain inescapable look. I think it's important to create spaces that people enjoy being in, that are humane." Mait Lauri likes Gehry's idea because the whole point of designing a house is to create it for the people inside. With the Milena House, they had a unique opportunity to create a house from the inside out.
One of the company's goals has always been to avoid creating the same thing in every project. When a client hires them, they need to know that their interior will be unique, not a copy-and-paste of previous projects. Therefore, each project is unique because each client is unique. For example, the fireplace in Milena was a masterpiece. Did Da Vinci paint the Mona Lisa multiple times? No, and neither did Ako In. For the next project, they'll design something different; something inspired by a specific location, room, or client. With each project, they generate new ideas, which expands their skills to tackle new challenges.
A combination of luxury and nature
Entering Milena House is like entering a paradise of refined elegance. Extensive windows serve as portals to the surrounding forest, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. Deer grazing peacefully outside become part of the daily experience, and foxes and lynxes also make occasional appearances, fostering a sense of tranquility and immersion in nature.
The highlight of the home is undoubtedly the captivating double-sided fireplace. Strategically placed to divide the dining and living areas, it features a luxurious combination of Black Fusion granite and rich wood paneling. This visually stunning centerpiece exudes warmth and sophistication, becoming a natural focal point for gatherings and relaxation.
Ako In's focus on sustainability is reflected in their timeless design philosophy. They believe that a well-crafted interior, constructed from high-quality materials and infused with a touch of designer ingenuity, transcends passing trends. This approach ensures that Milena House will remain a sanctuary of comfort and luxury for years to come.
A legacy of award-winning design
The 2024 Luxury Lifestyle Awards are just the latest feather in Ako In's well-deserved cap. Their commitment to exceptional design has earned them recognition in Estonia and beyond. Their portfolio boasts accolades such as Best Wooden Building of the Year 2009, Best Museum Interior Design, and Best Building of the Year for residential and commercial projects. Their reach extends beyond Estonia's borders, with completed projects in Finland and Latvia demonstrating their versatility and ability to translate their design philosophy to other cultures.
