Protection against smog. Anti-smog cosmetics

December 17, 2021

Thick, heavy air and an unpleasant odor are signs that may indicate the dangerous phenomenon of smog. It's best to avoid going outdoors; smog negatively impacts our health and beauty. Smog is a buildup of air pollutants caused by human activity. It most often occurs in cities in late autumn and winter, when many homes turn on furnaces that emit harmful substances into the atmosphere. Smog is also caused by exhaust fumes and gases emitted by industrial plants. Smog is a very dangerous phenomenon and a real scourge of the 21st century in many cities around the world. Polluted air negatively impacts our health and skin, so it's worth considering using special anti-smog cosmetics.

Anti-smog cosmetics, what are they for?

Anti-smog cosmetics help maintain healthy skin, not only during smog. Their primary role is to:

  • Freeing the skin from sebum and makeup residue, impurities and cleansing the pores where impurities accumulate during the day;
  • They strengthen the skin's protection against smog.

These cosmetics are designed to maintain a state of balance so that the skin can resist the negative influence of the environment and can fulfill its physiological functions as effectively as possible.

The role of anti-smog cosmetics:

  • Creating an invisible barrier strong enough to prevent impurities from remaining on the skin's surface;
  • Skin protection against other harmful environmental factors, e.g. UV rays;
  • Providing essential hydration for the integrity of the skin barrier, which determines firmness, brightness and freshness;
  • They support natural defense mechanisms against free radicals. For this reason, anti-pollution cosmetic treatments typically contain highly concentrated antioxidants;
  • Preventing oxidative reactions that lead to early skin aging;
  •  They prevent the skin from dulling due to pollution.

How to care for your skin during smog

Using anti-smog cosmetics isn't enough to fully protect our skin from the harmful effects of polluted air. Daily care, morning and evening, is essential. Recommended skincare treatments include:

  • Cleansing the skin in the morning and evening. It's better to choose non-aggressive formulas that remove superficial sebum and impurities without damaging the skin's biofilm. Cleansing removes dirt, impurities, and excess sebum, and also facilitates the removal of dead skin cellsthat clog pores and can contribute to the formation of blackheads and pimples.
  • Once a week, to keep the skin bright and clean, it is advisable to use peelings with smoothing microgranules and
  • Applying cosmetic face masks once in a while;
  • After cleansing, apply a good moisturizer: this step is essential to keep the skin barrier intact and functional.

Effects of creams and serums equipped with anti-pollution filters:

  • They act as a screen against pollution and create a protective film;
  • They provide protection against adverse environmental impacts;
  • They reduce the negative effects of free radicals;
  • They hinder the penetration of pollutants and other substances potentially harmful to the skin.

When it comes to hydration, the choices can range from creams to serums to be used alone or with regular skincare products.

Daytime skincare products should contain sunscreen. In fact, the harmful effects of pollution are cumulative with those of ultraviolet rays, increasing oxidation reactions in the skin. Remember, this phenomenon predisposes to premature aging, which manifests itself in the appearance of wrinkles and spots.
