Tag Heuer presents the new Monaco model.

December 3, 2020

Equipped with the Calibre Heuer 02 watchmaking movement, the new models in the TAG Heuer Monaco chronograph series feature details inspired by their early predecessors and set the tone for the entire collection to come.

Swiss luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer is presenting three new Monaco models, continuing a new chapter in the brand's history that began in 2019, when the company celebrated the 50th anniversary of its iconic watch. These impressive new 2020 models are equipped with a powerful in-house movement – the Calibre Heuer 02. They also boast a stunning, distinctive design. All three are inspired by models from the 1970s. Two, in turn, are presented on a modernized metal bracelet recreated specifically for these watches. Such bold stylistic choices make the Monaco more than just a legacy of the renowned collection.

Of these three new additions, the most prominent is the model with a bold black dial. Its counterpart features a shimmering blue dial with touches of red, white, and navy blue. This harkens back to the original Monaco watches from 1969. Both models are presented on a stainless steel bracelet. They feature square counters at 3 and 9 o'clock, as well as a red central seconds hand. The black dial model is also available on a black leather strap.

The Calibre Heuer 02 movement is housed behind a sapphire crystal case. Its power reserve is impressive, reaching 80 hours. These new models exemplify how TAG Heuer combines iconic designs with advanced internal technology.

The new Monaco watches are distinguished by their unique stainless steel bracelet. Nearly two decades have passed since new models were presented on a metal bracelet. This particular example recalls the H-shaped bracelet used on Monaco watches in the early 1970s. The designers wanted to give the 2020 models a new character, finding inspiration in archival exhibits at the TAG Heuer Museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The original steel bracelet has been redesigned to meet today's standards and improve wearer comfort.

"The bracelet is particularly important for any wristwatch – no one wants it to be of poor quality. For the new Monaco watches, we've evoked their illustrious past with a familiar design and color, while also highlighting the collection's forward-thinking nature with innovative new technology," says Catherine Eberlé-Devaux, Heritage Director at TAG Heuer.

True to its original design, the bracelet is wider at the dial to support its weight. It tapers where it wraps around the wrist, providing greater comfort. The horizontal bars are connected by smaller links. The butterfly clasp is proof that this bracelet is a work of haute horlogerie. The TAG Heuer name is engraved on the clasp. This is another detail that symbolizes that the new Monaco is not only a piece of heritage but also an important model in the TAG Heuer collection.

Fifty years later, the Monaco's story continues with contemporary interpretations. With each new release, this iconic timepiece embodies the spirit of TAG Heuer's avant-garde watchmaking and reinforces its reputation as one of the most extraordinary brands in the watch world. The launch of these luxurious new releases coincides with the company's 160th anniversary. This is evidence that TAG Heuer has begun writing the next chapter in its history while simultaneously propelling the Monaco into the future.
